Son sells 28 years worth of birthday whisky to buy first home

A SMART idea that took a lot of self control..

A 28-year-old man was able to take the first step to buying his first house after saving up 28 years worth of birthday presents from his father.

The presents in question? 18-year-old bottles of Macallan Whisky.

Since his first birthday, Matthew Robson's father Pete has been buying him a bottle of 18-year-old Macallan whisky each year-- an interesting choice in gift for a baby, toddler, child and young teenager, but one which would be gratefully accepted once you're an adult.

Even when Matthew came of age, however, he was under strict orders not to open the bottles, as smart-thinking Pete new they would become even more valuable with age.

Now Matthew's birthday collection is worth over £40,000 and has been put up for sale, with the 28-year-old hoping to use the money to put a deposit down on his first home.

Irish whiskey: the secret to a long life?

Speaking to the BBC, Matthew explained that he always thought the whisky birthday presents were "quirky", as he was "slightly too young to start drinking".

"But I was under strict instructions, never, never to open them and I tried my hardest and succeeded and they're all intact."

His father, who is originally from Milnathort in Scotland, said he bought the first bottle of whisky to "wet the baby's head" and the idea grew from there.

"I thought it would be interesting if I bought one every year and he'd end up with 18 bottles of 18-year-old whisky for his 18th birthday," he told the outlet.
"It wasn't the only present he got from us. It was just meant to be a unique present but it was a little bit of luck that we kept it going."
