One Corkman stands to make a small fortune if Annalise Murphy takes Gold in Rio

ANNALISE Murphy is sailing in her medal race later today (August 15) and if the Olympic sailor takes gold, one Corkman stands to make a small fortune.

John Downey, 31, placed a bet with Paddy Power that Ms Murphy would place first in the laser radial - at odds of 50/1.

With his original bet of €20, Mr Downey could be up €1000 by the end of the day.

The Corkman, who is a sailor himself, raced against Ms Murphy's sister Claudine when they were younger, and says that Annalise is performing extremely well, and she is "insanely focused".

Annalise Murphy has consistently ranked well in her preliminary heats in Rio, finishing 7th out of 36 on Saturday, qualifying her for the medal race later today.

What would Mr Downey do with the money if he won?

"I'll probably throw a party for Annalise and ask the O'Donovan lads from Skibbereen to come along!"
