Appeal launched as life-saving search and rescue boat destroyed by thieves in Mayo

AN URGENT appeal for information has been launched after a life-saving search and rescue boat was destroyed by thieves in County Mayo.

Rescuers from Corrib Mask Search and Rescue took to Facebook where they announced their brand new search and rescue boat had been stripped of its engine and GPS plotter, rendering it unfit for use.

Stating they were "devastated" at the robbery, the CMSR pleaded with any witnesses to come forward, asking:

"If anyone was in the vicinity of Cong within the last 48 hours, have seen, heard, or if someone tried to sell any parts of a boat.
Please contact Claremorris Garda Station tel:+353949372080 or Garda Confidential 1800 250 025."

The Zodiac boat was stripped of a Yamaha Engine and GPS Plotter, at a value of around 10,000-- a huge loss to the service which saves countless lives in Ireland each year.

Since the devastating news was announced, the Corrib Mask Search and Rescue were inundated with messages of support from the public, with many offering to send a donation to help the essential service to buy a new motor and GPS if the stolen items are not recovered.

Again taking to Facebook, a spokesperson wrote of their gratitude to everyone who had gotten in touch, writing:

"The crew are all shocked and still trying to come to terms with what happened.

"The fact that people could carry out such a crime and not realize or care about the consequences it could have, is very hard to contemplate.

"We will do our upmost to get the boat back on the water as soon as possible and we will keep everyone posted when we get more information."

"Thank you for your continued support. Without you, our service is not possible."

If you would like to donate towards the cost of a new motor and GPS, you can visit the Corrib Mask GoFundMe page here.
