Donald Trump congratulates Boris Johnson on UK election win and promises 'massive new trade deal'

DONALD TRUMP has congratulated Boris Johnson following his landslide election victory and has hinted at plans for a “massive” post-Brexit trade deal involving the UK and US.

The Conservative Party won a majority of at least 76, it what represents the party’s biggest general election victory since 1987.

Mr Johnson described the result as a clear mandate to take the UK out of the EU in January 2020 "no ifs, no buts".

Taking to Twitter in the wake of the result Mr Trump offered his congratulations to the Conservative Party leader.

The US President tweeted: "Congratulations to Boris Johnson on his great WIN!

"Britain and the United States will now be free to strike a massive new Trade Deal after BREXIT. This deal has the potential to be far bigger and more lucrative than any deal that could be made with the E.U. Celebrate Boris!"

Mr Trump previously spoke in glowing terms about Mr Johnson during the recent NATO summit, despite promising to stay out of the UK general election.

He described himself as a "fan of Brexit" and felt Mr Johnson was "very capable" and would "do a good job" as Prime Minister.

The President’s comments were echoed by his daughter Ivanka Trump, who tweeted: “Congratulations Prime Minister Boris Johnson!”
