Man appears in court over alleged glass bottle attack on priest

A MAN has appeared in court in connection with an alleged attack on a priest with a glass bottle in a cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Jason Irvine, 31, of no fixed abode, made no plea at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday and was remanded in custody.

He has also been charged in connection with a further assault at Princes Street Gardens East in the city on Monday, July 26.

According to the Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh, a priest was praying alone at St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral in Edinburgh on the morning of Monday, July 26 when a man approached him and asked him if he was a priest.

When he replied that he was, the man allegedly attacked the priest with a bottle before chasing him through the cathedral.

The priest managed to fend off the man and escaped without injury, before the man fled the church.
