Italy 3
Ireland 26
Joe Schmidt's Ireland team eventually overcame Italy's spirited resistance to get their Six Nations title defence off to a winning start.
Three Ian Keatley penalties ensured Ireland departed at the break with a 9-3 lead as Kelly Haimona only kicked one first half penalty for the home side in Rome.
After the restart Ireland controlled much of the contest as Keatley landed a fourth penalty before Paul O'Connell's work allowed Conor Murray race over for a critical try as Ireland edged further ahead.
Then Tommy O'Donnell scored a try following a pass from replacement Ian Madigan, who subsequently added the conversion.
