Irish boxer Ciara Ginty misses out on gold in China

IRISH boxer Ciara Ginty missed out on gold today at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, after losing to USA’s Jajaira Gonzalez in the 60kg final.

Ginty had to accept a silver medal after Gonzalez, the current AIBA World Youth champion, scored a unanimous decision across the four rounds over the Mayo lightweight.

Current AIBA World Junior champion Ginty qualified for Nanjing, where she won two of her three bouts, through the 2014 AIBA World Youth Championships.

She is the first Irish boxer to appear in an Olympic Youth final since Belfast’s Ryan Burnett won gold in Singapore in 2010. He went on to turn professional with Ricky Hatton.

Donegal heavyweight Michael Gallagher claimed bronze in Nanjing and Cork middleweight Christina Desmond finished fourth-placed in the 75kg class.
