Charing Cross station in London evacuated after man claims to have bomb

CHARING CROSS underground station in central London has been evacuated following reports of a man on the tracks claiming to have a bomb.

Armed police have been called to deal with the situation.

The incident occurred in the midst of rush-hour traffic.

Witnesses described several police vehicles descending upon the station, through which both overground and underground trains run, where passengers were told to "move away" as the station was evacuated.

The British Transport Police have said that they are "currently dealing with an incident at Charing Cross station following reports of a man on the tracks claiming to have a bomb."

Scotland Yard said: "Officers are currently assisting the British Transport Police at Charing Cross train station following a report of a man acting suspiciously. The station has been evacuated as a precaution and is currently closed."

The northern line is currently closed and its twitter account said: "There is currently no southbound service from Camden Town to Kennington via Charing Cross, due to a customer incident.

"Northbound trains are also not calling at Charing Cross."
