Elderly man, 83, dies after being hit by truck in County Cork

AN ELDERLY man has died in a tragic traffic accident in County Cork.

The victim, who has been named as local man Eddie Goggin, 83, was crossing Main Street in Charleville when he was hit by a truck at around 11am yesterday.

The emergency services were called, but despite best efforts to save his life, the elderly man's injuries proved fatal and he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí cordoned off the area yesterday morning in order to perform a technical examination of the scene, and diversions were put in place in the County Cork town for a number of hours.

The scene was attended by Gardaí, paramedics and two units of the fire service, and the victim's body was removed to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

An appeal for witnesses has been launched An Garda Síochána in order to examine the lead-up to the accident, and have urged anyone who was in the Main Street, particularly motorists who may have dash-cam footage of the accident, to contact them at Charleville Garda Station on 063 21770.

The driver of the truck, a 58-year-old Cork man, was uninjured but was treated for shock at the scene of the incident.

Mr Goggin is survived by his wife and adult children.
