AN Irish women’s rugby website will battle it out against the likes of BBC Sport and Sky Sports for a major media award.
ScrumQueens.com, set up by Ali Donnelly, has been shortlisted for Media Organisation of the Year at the Women’s Sport Trust #BeAGameChanger Awards.
From humble beginnings in 2009, ScrumQueens has grown – and is now the “go-to place” for up-to-date commentary on women’s rugby, Donnelly told The Irish Post.
“We were delighted to be nominated, particularly when we saw the very prestigious shortlist,” Donnelly said of the nomination.
“We are the only organisation in there that is dedicated to a single sport and also the only non-commercial nominee so it's very special for us and a reward for all of our hard work.”
31-year-old Donnelly is a native of Ballintotis in Co. Cork and has been living in Twickenham since 2009. She runs ScrumQueens.com on a voluntary basis with a team of dedicated writers, while working full time with HM Treasury.
Six outlets have been shortlisted for the award - BT Sport, BBC Sport, Sky Sports, The Daily Telegraph and First News, as well as SrumQueens.com.
Despite competition from bigger media outlets, Ali is unfazed. “If you're passionate about something then don't worry that your competitors may be huge organisations with lots of money and resources, just go and do it,” she said.
The awards will take place on May 14 on London’s South Bank.
