Teenager dies in hospital after freak railing accident

A 14-year-old boy who was injured in a freak accident when his head and neck became trapped in railings near his home in Kinsale, Co Cork, has died in hospital.

Leon Connon passed away at Cork University Hospital yesterday after failing to recover from the serious injuries he sustained when he collapsed on Saturday night whilst he was out with friends.

He was at the edge of Orchards Estate when he began to feel ill and went to rest against a railing.

However, he collapsed on top of the railing after becoming weak and his head and neck became trapped between the railings and he was unable to breathe.

His friends alerted the boy’s mother, Dearbhail, and a neighbour was able to free the teenager before the emergency services arrived.

Gardaí said they were treating the death as a tragic accident but will now prepare a file for an inquest at the Coroner’s Court.
