Businessman pays £750,000 for Irishman's photograph of a potato

AN IRISH photographer’s portrait of a potato has been sold for a massive £750,000.

Kevin Abosch, 47, who has photographed Johnny Depp, Bob Geldof and Steven Spielberg, took the picture of the organic potato in 2010.

Known for his simple portraits with a plain black background, Irish Central reports that his clients pay over £100,000 ($150,000) for a headshot, or £350,000 ($500,000) if it is for commercial use.

But it was a simple picture of a potato on a black background that caught the eye of a businessman that paid £750,000 ($1million) for it.

The photo, titled “Potato #345 (2010)”, was hanging in the Irishman’s Paris studio when one of his customers saw it.

Despite the hefty price tag, the unnamed buyer was unfazed and shelled out an incredible £750,000 for the Abosch portrait.

“Kevin likes potatoes because they, like people, are all different yet immediately identifiable as being essentially of the same species,” his studio told PetaPixel.

“He has photographed many potatoes. This one is one of his favourites.”

The Dublin-born photographer works between Dublin and Paris.
