Man dies after getting into difficulty while swimming in River Shannon

A MAN has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the River Shannon on Saturday.

The incident happened at Parteen Railway Bridge, a popular spot for swimmers north of Limerick city.

The man in his 40s got into trouble at around 5pm.

A member of the public alerted emergencies services and Limerick City Fire Crews attended the scene.

The man was retrieved from the water shortly before 5.20pm before being taken to University Hospital Limerick, where he was pronounced dead.

A file will be prepared for the coroner.

Numbers of people swimming at the location, near Long Pavement Road, have increased in recent days as temperatures have soared.
