Met Éireann: Storm Atiyah batters Ireland with thousands of power outages reported

STORM ATIYAH hit the Irish mainland over the weekend, bringing with it gusts of up to 130kmh.

Met Éireann issued a Status Red warning for Co. Kerry on Sunday while the rest of the country braced itself for a very wet and windy few days.

RTE reported that thousands of homes lost power on Sunday evening, with the south-west of the country being worst affected.

Over 3,000 homes and business were reported to be without power in Galway and Limerick alone on Sunday night.

In Kerry, there were claims of trees falling on cars and even reports of a shed, which had blown over, blocking traffic on a road near Murrioch.

Trains in Kerry and Cork have been running at reduced speeds over the last few days, causing significant delays, while a number of flights out of Cork City Airport have been cancelled.

While the weather warning has since been reduced to Orange for most Ireland, the country is set to experience a "very strong wind" and plenty of rain over the next few days.

A forecaster said on Monday: "Very windy in places at first, especially in coastal areas and in the east, but strong northwesterly winds will continue to decrease this morning, becoming mostly light to moderate westerly today.

"A mainly dry, bright day, with sunny spells, but a few scattered showers will occur in the early morning.

"Maximum temperatures 6 to 9 Celsius. Cloud will increase gradually from the Atlantic, possibly bringing some drizzle to the northwest later.

"Tuesday will be wet and very windy, with occasional rain, heavy in places.

"Clearer conditions, with scattered showers, will extend from the Atlantic during the afternoon and evening.

"Strong and gusty southerly winds will veer southwest to west with the clearance, easing a little.

"Very mild for a time, but turning cold later. Maximum temperatures 11 to 14 Celsius."
