Former Ireland soccer star Niall Quinn has launched a €2million appeal for the charity that helped him through depression after he quit football.
The ex-Arsenal and Sunderland legend poured out his heart as he kicked off the summer appeal for The Ireland Fund of Great Britain in London.
"In 2003 when I was at a very low ebb and suffering from depression after ending my football career, it was the Ireland Fund that got in touch and gave me a lovely award for my football and charity work.
"It was the first award I'd ever received outside of football, and thanks to the Ireland Fund it was the first step towards me getting out of my rut."
Quinn, who recovered to go on to be Sunderland football club's chairman, paid tribute to the charity that helped him through his dark days as he launched their appeal aimed at raising money for the dilapidated children's cancer ward at Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Crumlin, Dublin, where he grew up as a boy.
