There have been no construction-related deaths recorded in the development of the London Olympic site.
With the build now complete and the project at final fitting out stages the Olympic Delivery Authority have confirmed there were no fatalities during the Stratford stadium’s four year build.
The 100 per cent safety record is the first for an Olympic stadium development and is particularly poignant for the Irish community as many home-grown firms were contractors on the job.
Irish fundraiser Jennifer Deeney, of the Lighthouse Club charity for the construction Industry, has given Health and Safety talks at the Olympics site over the years.
“Having recorded no constriction related deaths is a fantastic thing for London and for the Irish construction community who were so heavily involved in the development of the Olympic site.” She said.
“It’s the first Olympic site to achieve this and must set a precedent for the future.”
Jennifer’s husband was killed in a construction accident while he was working on the Canary Wharf build – where a total of seven fatalities were recorded.
She has since devoted her time to raising funds for the construction charity which supports the families of those in the industry in their time of need.
