Husband and wife drown in River Shannon while home to visit family in Ireland

AN IRISH man and his English wife have drowned in the River Shannon while in Ireland on holiday visiting family.

Frank and Alexandra Dunne, who were in their 30s, had hired a cruiser boat to tour the Shannon just days before the tragic accident.

They had been living in Munich, Germany, and had returned to Ireland for a week to visit family.

It's understood the couple were reported missing yesterday, March 31 by a concerned friend to An Garda Síochána.

Gardaí later recovered the body of Mr Dunne in the River Shannon close to the hired cruiser at 2pm.

Mrs Dunne's body was later recovered later in the afternoon.

Speaking to The Irish Post, Mr Dunne's brother John said it was a "bitter sweet fate" the couple met together.

"Frank and Alex were truly made for each other," he said.

"It's a terribly bitter sweet fate they met together - together being the beauty in amongst all this sadness," he added.

Their bodies have been removed to Sligo University Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out on Monday.

At this stage gardaí are treating their deaths as accidental.
