GAA fans to unite in Croke Park to pay tribute to deceased teenager

MAYO and Dublin fans will unite at Croke Park this Sunday in a show of respect for the late Darragh Doherty.

Mayo’s former All-Ireland minor winner Doherty died on Sunday night when the car he was driving careered into a wall outside Ballinrobe. He was just 19 years old.

The Kilmaine forward wore the number 13 jersey when scoring 1-2 in Croke Park as Mayo lifted the Tom Markham Cup in 2013, and to pay tribute to the youngster both fans will applaud for 13 seconds during the 13th minute of the All-Ireland semi-final this weekend.

The idea was first suggested by former Mayo footballer David Brady on social media, and it soon captured the imagination of the GAA’s online community.

Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in for Doherty and 19-year-old Dromintee and Queens University footballer Peter Hughes, who was one of three friends killed in a crash on the A1 dual carriageway in Down at the weekend too.

As the GAA community comes to terms with both losses, tributes have been steadily flowing in via Twitter.
