Excise duty cuts on diesel and petrol take effect in Ireland

A REDUCTION of excise duty on petrol and diesel has come into effect in Ireland.

As of  yesterday (April 1), a pause is in place on the National Oil Reserves Agency (NORA) levy, which will mean effective cuts of 22 cent and 17 cent on diesel and petrol respectively when coupled with a reduction on fuels costs that came into effect last week.

The NORA levy cuts, which are designed to lessen the burden on the public due to rising fuel prices, will remain in place until June 1, 2026, the Government has confirmed.

"I am acutely aware of the pressures facing consumers and my department has acted without delay to enact this legislation to give effect to the levy reduction,” Ireland’s Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O'Brien confirmed last night.

“This is part of the broader measures that I, and government colleagues, announced last week,” he added.

“These measures are designed to support households and businesses in a targeted and time-bound manner.”

The Government has been forced to act as fuel prices recently spiked in Ireland, largely due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

“The department and I will continue to monitor and the review the situation and we will remain flexible in our response,” Minister O’Brien added.

“I will continue to engage with our EU and international partners,” he explained.

“Yesterday I met [online] with Energy Ministers from across the EU – to continue to coordinate an EU-wide approach to ongoing developments," the Minister added.

“The ongoing conflict in the Middle East demonstrates that we must reduce our dependence on imported fossil fuels , accelerate the deployment of renewable energy, and invest in our electricity grid and in energy efficiency."
