IRISH Hollywood star Maureen O'Hara has been laid to rest beside her beloved late husband in America.

The 95-year-old star of the silver screen died last month in her sleep at her home in Idaho. She is survived by her daughter Bronwyn, a grandson and her great-grandchildren.

O'Hara, fondly remembered for her roles in The Quiet Man and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, was renowned for her fiery spirit and her proud Irish roots.

Her family was joined by friends from Ireland for the funeral service in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

O'Hara's grandson, Conor Fitzsimons, with whom she lived in the US, told the congregation of her fierce pride of Ireland.

"The one thing that I think my grandmother was proud of most was being Irish because that meant to her something that nobody could take from her," he said.

"It was in her heart. It was in her soul. It was in her spirit. Ireland was her heart."

The funeral was led by Irish priest Fr Gerald Weymes, who was taught by O'Hara's drama teacher Ena Mary Burke in Dublin.

Pictures of O'Hara in films from throughout her career were displayed during the funeral in St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, near Washington DC.

The daughter of renowned actor and close friend John Wayne, Melinda Munoz, spoke fondly of O'Hara, who she said was like an aunt to her.

"A wonderful, wonderful woman, besides being a fabulous actress. She was real," she said.

A native of Dublin, O'Hara's career saw her leave Ireland for Hollywood, where she became a firm fixture of the film industry.

Described as the Queen of Technicolour, O'Hara's vivid red hair and striking beauty earned her roles alongside John Wayne and with renowned director Alfred Hitchcock.

Chicago's Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe Band played Garryowen as O'Hara's remains made the journey to her final resting place.

After the funeral service yesterday afternoon in Virginia, O'Hara was laid to rest beside her late husband Charles F. Blair Junior, who passed away some 37 years before his wife.
