'East Grinstead clash going to be a big one', says Wild Geese Director

Wild Geese Director of Rugby Simon Martinson says his side’s top of the table clash with East Grinstead is “a big one”.

The Exiles currently sit top of National League 3 London & South East with East Grinstead just five points behind in second.

Adding to the occasion is a return to London Irish for former back Justin Bishop, who is the visitors’ boss, and Geese DoR Martinson is looking forward to pitting his wits against him.

“It’s going to be a big one," said Martinson.

"Their head coach is Justin Bishop, who came up through the ranks at London Irish.

“Their fullback, Matt Betty, also played for us a few seasons back. It’s going to be an interesting clash.

“We’ve never played them before but with Bish as head coach there’s going to be added spice. Top versus second will also add to the game.”

The Wild Geese have been in superb form recently, their last defeat coming back in October to Bury St Edmunds.

Since then, they have racked up six straight wins in all competitions to rocket to the top of the league.

How long does Martinson think the run can last?

"How long’s a piece of string?" he said.

"Our intention is to win every game. That’s why the boys play and we’re all involved with the club. Our aim is to get back up to National League 2.”

Off the field, Saturday is anticipated to be a big day in the calendar for the Wild Geese.

Over 170 are expected for a pre-match lunch, with guests being treated to an after-dinner speech from former internationals Serge Betsen and Alan Old.

“It’s a big showcase for us. There are a lot of Irish businesses coming down (on Saturday). Eddie Fahey, our club captain, knows Serge and Alan is the father of one of our coaches, Mike Old, so it was easy enough to get them,” added Martinson.
