Matthew Twomey leaves Cork's senior camogie team

Cork's senior camogie team is now in search of a new manager following the unexpected departure of Matthew Twomey. Twomey announced his decision to step down from the role just weeks after guiding the Rebels to All-Ireland senior glory this year. It has been reported that Twomey informed the county board of his decision to leave on Monday night.

Twomey took over the inter-county team in 2021 and had a challenging campaign in 2022, which resulted in losses in the league and All-Ireland finals during his first and second seasons. However, he managed to turn things around and led the team to victory in the O'Duffy Cup this year.

In the 2023 All-Ireland championship, Cork faced strong opponents, including Kilkenny and Galway, in the knockout stages before securing a resounding victory over Waterford in the final. Cork claimed their first title since 2018, with a final score of 5-13 to 0-09, in front of a record crowd of 30,191 at Croke Park. Amy O'Connor emerged as the standout performer, scoring a sensational hat-trick of goals in the final.

Reflecting on the win thus year, Twomey stated, "We bottled [the heartbreak], we bottled a lot of it. It was tough last year losing it and losing a league final again, and we received a lot of criticism." He went on to say, "But we just kept it between our four walls. We bottled it, and there was no way we were going to let it slip away today."

Nonetheless, Cork will now commence the search for a suitable replacement for their former manager.
