Michael Fassbender, Philomena and U2 miss out on Oscars

MICHAEL Fassbender and U2 both missed out on Oscars on a disappointing night for Irish nominees at last night’s ceremony in LA.

Kerryman Fassbender was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for the first time for his role as a brutal slave owner in 12 Years A Slave.

He arrived to the ceremony with just minutes to spare, taking his mother Adele as his date.

But it wasn’t to be his night as he lost out to Jared Leto, who took the prize for his work as a transgender AIDS victim in the Dallas Buyer's Club.

Meanwhile, U2 shockingly lost for Best Original Song having scooped the same award at previous ceremonies.

They performed Ordinary Love from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom on the Oscars stage, but lost out to Let It Go from animated feature Frozen.

Stephen Frears’s Philomena went away with nothing, but St Albans-based Irishwoman Philomena Lee, whose story inspired the film, was on hand to enjoy the night.

Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity was the big winner on the night, taking home seven wins, including Best Directing, Cinematography, Visual Effects, Film Editing, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Original Score.

As well as Best Picture, Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave also won in the categories for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress in a Supporting Role, which went to Lupita Nyong’o.

Matthew McConaughey won Best Actor in a Leading Role, while Best Actress in a Leading Role went to Blue Jasmine's Cate Blanchett.
