21-year-old man arrested as body found in search for Karen Buckley

A 21-year-old man has been arrested in Glasgow following the discovery of a body in the search for missing Cork student Karen Buckley.

Human remains were found on a farm, about six miles north of Glasgow, yesterday evening following a four day search for Ms Buckley, 24.

In a statement this morning, Greater Glasgow Police said: “A 21 year-old man has been arrested and is presently detained in police custody in connection with the death of Karen Buckley.”

Formal identification has yet to take place but police in the city believe the body is that of Ms Buckley and her family has been informed.

Ms Buckley had moved to Scotland in February to study occupational therapy at Glasgow Caledonian University.

A native of Mourneabbey, near Mallow in Co. Cork, she had previously studied at the University of Limerick and had been working in the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Essex until her move to Glasgow.

On Saturday night, Ms Buckley and her friends arrived in Sanctuary nightclub in Glasgow’s west end at about 11.45pm.

At 1am, she told her friends she was going to use the bathroom but she never returned.

The last sighting of her was on CCTV, speaking to a man outside the premises. It was believed she travelled with the man in his car to his Dorchester Avenue home.

On Tuesday, a handbag, believed to be the one Ms Buckley was carrying on the night, was discovered in Dawsholm Park.

Yesterday evening Glasgow police moved the focus of the search to High Craigton farm outside of Glasgow, following a “definite line of enquiry”.

“Though formal identification has yet to take place, we believe the remains may be those of Karen Buckley. Enquiries are continuing,” a spokesperson for the police said.
