Donald Trump finally admits his presidency is over and promises an orderly transition of power

DONALD TRUMP has finally conceded defeat in the US election, over two months since the country went to the polls.

He released a statement saying that while he still disagrees with the result - again reiterating his claim that the election was stolen from him - he would commit to an "orderly transition" of power to Joe Biden's administration.

Mr Trump described his four years in office as "the greatest first time in presidential history".

"Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th," Trump said in a statement shared by Dan Scavino, White House deputy chief of staff for communications.

"I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it's only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again!"

It came just hours after a number of Trump supports stormed the Capitol in an attempt to stop Congress from certifying Biden's election victory.

Four people are believed to have been killed during the riots, including one woman who was shot by police as she climbed through a window of the Capitol building.

At the time, Trump tweeted his supporters and encouraged them to "remain peaceful", but he was criticised for failing to condemn the storming of the Capitol building itself, and referring to the supports that did so as "heroes".
