Former England U21 footballer Jlloyd Samuel killed in car crash aged 37

FORMER England U21 and Aston Villa defender Jlloyd Samuel has been killed in a car accident.

The retired footballer was involved in a crash after dropping his kids off at school.

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association confirmed the news on their official Facebook page.

The statement read: "We've received some terrible news that former National defender and Ex-Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers player Jlloyd Samuel died in a car crash this morning in England.

"According to reports, Jlloyd was returning home after dropping his kids off to school and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

"The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association and his former national teammates at this time extends deepest condolences to his family members both in the UK and here in Trinidad and Tobago."

Samuel came through the ranks at Charlton Athletic before joining Aston Villa, where he made his debut in 1999 and went on to make close to 200 appearances before joining Bolton in 2007.

He played for England U21’s and had been selected for the first team in 2004 by Sven-Goran Eriksson but was not selected and later chose to play for the country of his birth.

He had hoped to be named in the 2006 World Cup squad but his application was rejected by FIFA.

The defender would later make his debut for Trinidad in 2009.
