Irishman, 24, dies after taking online diet pills

AN Irishman has died after taking diet pills, prompting Gardaí to issue a warning about the dangers of illegal medical products.

It is understood that the 24-year-old, who has not been named, purchased the slimming product online.

The pills claim to speed up metabolism – though they contained the potentially lethal chemical Dinitrophenol (DNP), which is suspected to be the reason behind the young man’s death.

The man’s tragic death came just weeks after a British woman died of the same cause.

Gardaí and the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) in Ireland have issued a severe warning to the Irish public about diet pills, as they launch investigations into the man’s death.

They advise people not to buy any illegal medicine on the internet and, for those who have already bought them, to contact the HPRA for disposal.

Anyone who is feeling ill after taking the diet pills should contact a doctor immediately.

HPRA’s chief executive Pat O'Mahony said: “These investigations are on-going, and we strongly urge members of the public to never use the internet to source slimming products or any prescription medicines at any time - no amount of these products is safe to take.

“Bogus websites can be very sophisticated and appear to be legitimate. However, in reality they can be supplying unsafe and harmful products.”
