Less than 20 legal abortions performed in Ireland last year

TWO WOMEN were allowed abortions under risk of suicide in 2017.

An annual report published by the Department of Health has revealed the number of legal abortions performed in Ireland last year.

The report of the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act found that 15 legal abortions were carried out in Ireland, 8 of which were from risk from physical illness.

5 abortions were performed due to emergency from physical illness while just 2 were carried out from the risk of suicide to the mother.

The act, enacted in 2013, was passed to regulate access to lawful termination of pregnancy in accordance with the X case and the judgment in the European Court of Human Right in the A, B and C v Ireland case.

From the passing of the referendum to repeal the eighth amendment by 66.4% in May, abortion is to become legalised in Ireland pending Government legislation.

The legislation to allow for unrestricted abortion up to 12 weeks is set to introduced in the next term of Government.
