Tributes have been paid to a well-known and much-loved London Irish publican who died last week.
Mr Doheny, originally from Kilkenny, was the landlord of the World's End pub in Camden. The father of three was an active member of London’s Irish community. During his ten years as chairman of the Camden Inner London Licensees Association (CILLA), he helped to raise a significant amount of money for several charities, including Aisling Return to Ireland.
“Mick was a great Irishman and was always a huge supporter of all Irish charities and organisations, especially ours,” said Alex McDonnell, co-ordinator of Aisling Return to Ireland. “We received funding from the money raised at the annual CILLA ball and were one of their favourite charities. We have always been very grateful to Mick and others at the organisation who dug deep to help us out when we had nothing.”
“This is such a huge shock and such a sad loss,” said Bob Dear, secretary of CILLA. “I have known Mick for 13 years. He was such a passionate and patriotic man who did so much for others and was also a great spokesperson for our trade in general.”
Tom Maloney, treasurer of CILLA, added: “Mick was the kind person with whom you knew where you stood. He was a hugely generous man who supported all the licensees and several charities in the area. This is absolutely tragic.”
The body of Mick Doheny was discovered in Camden town in early hours of Thursday November 8. Police officers attempted to resuscitate the 49-year-old, who was found lying unconscious at the junction of Pratt Street and Royal College Street, but he was pronounced dead at 4:49am.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said that the death is being treated as “unexplained” and that one man and two women were arrested, but have been released without charge. He added that a post-mortem examination on Mr Doheny has proved inconclusive and further tests will take up to six weeks to come back.
Once police complete their investigation, there will be a service for Mr Doheny in Camden. He will then be laid to rest in Westport, Co. Mayo.
