Two arrested in connection with assault of GAA football player

TWO men, both in their 20s, have been arrested in connection with an alleged assault on an Irish GAA player.

Laois inter-county footballer Daniel O'Reilly, who is from Graiguecullen, was taken to St Luke's General Hosptial in Kilkenny suffering from serious head injuries.

Mr O'Reilly, who is in his early 20s, was injured just after 1am on Easter Monday morning in the Potato Market area of Carlow town.

Graiguecullen GAA said they were heartborken and devastated following the news.

They also urged people to show their support offline rather than online given the matter is under investigation.

"We love you Dicey," they said in a statement on Twitter.

The two men were arrested yesterday evening and are being held by An Garda Síochána at Kilkenny and Thomastown.

Carlow gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 00353 59 9136620 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
