Two Irishmen reported to have died in building site accident in Perth

TWO men believed to have been Irish were killed this morning in a construction site accident in Perth, Western Australia.

The Irishmen were crushed under a slab of concrete when it fell on them on a building site in East Perth.

The accident happened at 11.30am local time this morning (3.30am Irish time) at the site of an apartment block that the men were working on.

Local reports state that at least one of the men was from Ireland – but BBC NI reports that both men were originally from the North of Ireland and in their early 20s.

The men have yet to be identified but the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland said it has been made aware of the incident and is on standby to provide consular assistance if required.

Jaxon Construction, the company that the deceased men were working for, also issued a statement.

“Jaxon sincerely regrets to confirm a serious incident which occurred at its Bennett Street apartment site in East Perth at approximately 11.30am today, which resulted in the death of two workers,” it read.

“Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences go out to their families, loved ones and colleagues.”

Though neither of the victims have been named, it is reported that one of them is from Omagh in Co. Tyrone – and had been in Australia for just a month.
