Video footage shows out of control sulky crashing into car during race in thick fog

A VIDEO of a dangerous sulky race in Limerick has gone viral after the clip showed one racer crashing into a vehicle on the road.

The race allegedly took place early in the morning last week, with racers and vehicles taking over the road in the Croom bypass area off the N20 Limerick Road.

A video of the race, which took place in thick fog at around 7 o'clock in the morning, was later posted to Youtube and has since made its way to other sites, including Reddit.

In the footage, one of the racers can be seen getting into difficulty and apparently losing control of the horse. As bystanders shout in warning from their vehicles, the racer crashes into a stationary car.

The driver is thrown from the sulky and the spooked horse continues fleeing down the road with the carriage still attached as cars involved in the race speed up to chase the animal down.

No injuries were reported following the incident.

Local TD and Minister Niall Collins told local outlet The Limerick Leader the footage was a prime example of "the dangers of sulkies travelling at high speeds on our roads".

"They are putting their own lives at risk as well as other road users," he added.

Earlier this week, Gardaí in Limerick arrested two men under suspicion of dangerous driving after they fled the scene when uniformed officers approached a sulky race which was taking place on a national road.
