Warning issued as heavy winds set to thrash west of Ireland

A WEATHER warning is in place as heavy winds are set to thrash the west of Ireland.

Ireland's weather authority Met Éireann said the status yellow warning is in place until Friday afternoon, December 29.

Counties in the west affected include Galway, north Leitrim, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

Waterford and south Wexford are also under the warning.

Overnight and on Friday morning, southwest winds will gradually veer west, reaching speeds of 50 to 60km/h, and gusts between 90 and 100km/h.

Today's warning follows the previous snow and ice advisory for 20 counties this week, which saw temperatures plummet to -4 degrees.
