‘We owe them, we owe them’ - Joe Biden marks New Year with tribute to frontline workers

US PRESIDENT-ELECT Joe Biden has paid tribute to America’s frontline medical staff for their bravery during the pandemic.

Speaking during an appearance on ABC’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve broadcast from Times Square in New York City, `Biden singled out healthcare staff for their heroism in facing down coronavirus.

For the incoming soon-to-be 46th President of the United States, the message was simple: “We owe them, we owe them, we owe them.”

Biden told viewers: “My mother used to have an expression. Bravery resides in every heart and someday it’ll be summoned. [In] the people we're honoring tonight, it was summoned, and they stepped up and they're brave, they did so much,” he said.

“They risked their lives, they've done so much for us and we owe them, we owe them, we owe them."

The Irish-American politician also took to Twitter to warn that while the immediate future looking difficult and the US nation would face tougher days still, 2021 would be a year of healing and hope.

“The challenges we face as a nation will not disappear overnight, but as we look forward to the start of a new year, I’m filled with fresh hope about the possibilities of better days to come. After a year of pain and loss, let us unite, heal, and rebuild in 2021.”

He also shared a video looking to the future, telling followers “In 2021, we’re going to build a brighter future.”
