'You will not speak to me like that!' – Irish Parliament suspended after huge shouting match erupts in the chamber

THE Dáil was suspended this afternoon after a massive shouting match erupted between the Healy-Rae brothers and Fianna Fáil TD Marc MacSharry.

An angry row began after Mr MacSharry objected to Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae's wish to speak on the issue of farming.

This was followed by loud shouting from the benches, with MacSharry telling the chamber that the same people get to speak all the time.

MacSharry shouted: “This is a disgrace!”

The Dáil has been trialling a new system where TDs use numbered cards to indicate when they are allowed to speak on an issue.

Pat 'The Cope' Gallagher – Leas-Cheann Comhairle of the chamber – quickly lost his own temper and suspended the session for a period of five minutes after Mr MacSharry shouted that he didn't care either way.

“Deputy MacSharry, control yourself,” said Gallagher, after threatening to suspend the House if he and the Healy-Raes failed to calm down.

MacGarry replied: “Suspend it if you like!"
