Young Irishman dies in tragic swimming pool accident hours after arriving in Spain

AN Irishman has died whilst on a family holiday in Spain.

The tourist - aged in his early twenties - is believed to have drowned in the swimming pool of the holiday apartments he had checked into just hours earlier, the Irish Independent reports.

The incident occurred yesterday evening at the popular Torremolinos tourist resort in the Costa del Sol.

Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it was providing consular assistance to the family of an Irishman who has died in Spain.

It has been reported that the tourist was with a group of 15 people, which included his parents. They were believed to be at the holiday apartments this morning.

A post-mortem is due to take place at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Malaga.

A hotel worker is thought to have pulled the man out of the water with the help of a receptionist after diving in to rescue him, according to the Irish Independent.

Paramedics attended the scene but could not revive him.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death but sources have suggested that it was the result of a tragic accident.
