Derrick Williams gets red card in MLS for horrid challenge

AS NASTY a challenge as you'll see.

Derrick Williams had been settling in quite nicely over in California.

In one of his first games for LA Galaxy, the Irishman put in a crunching tackle that was also an assist for former Manchester United striker Chicarito, and it sent the crowd absolutely wild.

But sadly, things have hit a bit of a roadblock for the Waterford man, as he picked up a red card for a horror tackle as his side crashed to a 3-0 defeat against the Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer on Saturday.

Just before half-time, he left opposition player Andy Polo in a horrific state after a tackle that is a red card every single day of the week.

Williams' manager Greg Vanney had no issues with the red, saying: "It's a tackle that is going to be a red card every single time.

"For me, it was almost Derrick a delayed reaction and that he probably should have read the play a little bit earlier and been a little bit tighter and he could have dealt with it in a different way.

"Then he saw it happen and was just so committed to the challenge at that point that it just became, with the amount of force, it's just never going to be OK, whether it's this league or any other league. It just becomes a challenge that's going to be a red card every time."

Here's hoping Williams bounces back from his suspension.
