Photos: Thousands line the streets for Manchester's St Patrick's Parade

THOUSANDS of people took to the streets of Manchester yesterday as the city went green for the annual St Patrick's Parade.

A sea of green lined the streets from the Irish World Heritage Centre into Albert Square as dancing, singing and cheering saw all attendees in fine form.

It is estimated that more than 20 per cent of the city's population may have Irish ancestry and they displayed their Irish roots with colourful outfits whilst enjoying live music and dance.

The day started with mass said in Gaelic by Father John Ahern at the Heritage Centre. It was his last St Patrick's Day mass in Manchester as he is retiring in September and returning to his native Kerry.

See this week's Irish Post (out Wednesday March 19) for dozens more pictures from the parade
