Dublin one of National Geographic's top winter break destinations

DUBLIN is one of the top destinations in the world for a winter getaway, the National Geographic has revealed.

The renowned travel magazine narrowed the endless options of winter holidays down to just ten – and Dublin managed to come in fifth place on the list.

Among the things that helped Dublin secure its spot was the city’s famous New Year’s Eve festival on College Green.

“The arts, culture, and live entertainment festival includes dazzling streetscapes illuminated by 3-D light projections and an outdoor New Year’s Eve Countdown Concert,” said the National Geographic’s Amy Alipio.

Along with the festival, Ms Alipio recommends the newly opened Dean Hotel on Harcourt Street for your stay and the upmarket nightclub of Lillie’s Bordello to dance the night away.

For theatre enthusiasts, she suggests a trip to the Abbey Theatre, just north of the River Liffey – and the Kilkenny shop for traditional Irish handcrafted merchandise.

The Irish capital was one of just two European destinations to be included on the list.
