Former Tánaiste Joan Burton loses her seat in Dublin West

FORMER TÁNAISTE Joan Burton has lost her seat in Dublin West.

The former leader of the Labour Party was one of the key figures in the Fine Gael-Labour government between 2011 and 2016.

She marginally held onto her seat during the last election and resigned as Labour leader following the results in 2016 as support from within her party collapsed.

Public support has only worsened in the three years since, it appears, as Burton misses out on a place in the Dail for the first time since she was first elected to the constituency in 1992.

In a constituency that includes Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Joan Burton received 4.8% of first preferences, according to The Journal.

Under Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Burton took the role of Minister for Social Protection, but attracted significant criticism during her time in office, as the Fine Gael-Labour government embarked on a series on cuts in a bid to rebalance the economy.
