Irish and British politicians to discuss role of sport in reconciliation

British politicians will be in Ireland today to discuss the role of sport in reconciliation.

The power of sport as a way to build community cohesion in both the North and South of Ireland will be the main topic of discussion at the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly's 50th plenary session in Dublin today.

The session will be opened by an Taoiseach Enda Kenny and politicians from across Britain and Ireland, as well as the heads of the GAA and FAI, will be in attendance.

Fine Gael’s Frank Feighan TD, the Irish co-chair for the plenary session, said: “The three largest sporting organisations in Northern Ireland have made steady progress in breaking down sectarian barriers in recent years.

"It will be a valuable opportunity to hear from rugby, football and GAA voices on how sport can foster cross-community spirit.”

Starting off with the opening address in the Seanad Chamber, the attendees will then be given a tour of Croke Park before the main discussion of the day.

The outcome of the Stormont House Agreement will also be up for debate at the session, which continues into tomorrow.
