Viewers complain to BBC after Nelson Mandela coverage interrupts Mrs Brown's Boys

MORE than 800 people complained to the BBC after the broadcaster interrupted an episode of Mrs Brown’s Boys to announce the death of Nelson Mandela.

The broadcaster confirmed it had received 850 complaints about its decision to air a special news bulletin during a repeat episode of Brendan O’Carroll’s sitcom last Thursday evening, December 5.

BBC News Director James Harding has since apologised to viewers but stood by the decision, claiming the passing of the former South African President was of “singular significance”.

“The importance of his life and marking his death seems extremely clear to us,” he told the BBC’s Newswatch programme over the weekend.
