Ireland's WC game against Australia an 80,000 sell-out

A chief executive of the Women's World Cup has announced that Ireland's opening game against co-hosts Australia next month has been sold out. Ireland will play Australia on July 20 at a sold-out game in Stadium Australia in Sydney.

The clash was originally scheduled to take place at Allianz Stadium, which holds 42,000, but due to ticket demands, it will now take place in Sydney. The venue has a capacity of 82,500.

"There is currently nothing available," said Dave Beeche, a chief executive of the Women's World Cup.

On the same day, the other co-host, New Zealand, will play Norway. The game in Auckland has not been sold out though. With less than 25 days until kick-off, the tournament boss says only a "few thousand" tickets are left for New Zealand's opening game at Eden Park, where capacity will be just under 40,000.

When asked whether the Auckland stadium would be sold out for the opener, Beeche added, "Yes, definitely." "It's going to be a massive day for women's football."

Football's governing body, FIFA, has said around 1.1 million tickets have been sold for the 64 matches in Australia and New Zealand.

This week, Vera Pauw will announce her final squad for the tournament.

Next week, Ireland will play France in their final game before jetting off to Australia and New Zealand. Ireland's game against France will begin at 8p.m.

After this, Ireland will then play in the opening game of the World Cup against co-hosts Australia and also play group games against Canada and Nigeria in the following weeks.
