O'Neill to hand Shay Given international comeback in Oman friendly

IRELAND manager Martin O'Neill has suggested that Shay Given will feature at some point in Wednesday evening’s friendly home fixture against Oman.

The 38-year-old goalkeeper returned from a two-year international retirement period to join the squad in Dublin ahead of the game at the Aviva Stadium.

The Aston Villa stopper will most likely share the role with Rob Elliott of Newcastle, which would mean that Kieran Westwood and David Forde would not feature.

Everton midfielder Darron Gibson is set to return to action following last October's knee injury that he sustained against Kazakhstan.

James McCarthy will not feature in the squad to face Oman, and will instead be rested ahead of Ireland’s trip to Georgia for their first Euro 2016 qualifier on Sunday.

West Ham defender Joey O'Brien will return to his club for treatment on an ongoing knee problem and will not play a role in either of Ireland’s two upcoming games.

The 28-year-old’s withdrawal from the squad comes after he met up with the team in Malahide on Sunday.
