Irish skydiving granny, 80, jumps 13,000ft from a plane to see the world before she loses her sight

COUNTY Down skydiving granny Joan Smyth is losing her sight - and she is on a mission to tick things off her bucket list before she goes blind.

The Bangor native this week celebrated her 80th birthday by jumping 13,000ft from an airplane in Australia.

Smyth is suffering from glaucoma and wanted to get a birds-eye view of the world before her eyesight deteriorates any further, and raise some money for charity.

"Gosh, when I felt myself falling out I thought 'oh, I don't know if I like this or not'," Ms Smyth said after her skydive.

"But it was fine. The bit I didn't like so much was the turning in the air but we got there."

Joan Smyth, who is losing her sight to glaucoma, said she wanted to do the 4km jump so she could see the world from a bird's eye view before her vision deteriorates further and to also raise some money for charity.
