British-based dancers celebrate at World Irish Dancing Championships in London

TWO British-based Irish dancers were crowned World Champions yesterday as the 44th World Irish Dancing Championships opened in London.

Billed as “Olympics” of Irish dancing, more than 5,000 competitors are set to battle it out to be crowned champions this week, with up to 15,000 more expected to attend the eight-day event at the London Hilton Metropole.

Last night, Alliyah O'Hare (Girls 10-11) from the Scanlon School and Callum O’Neill (Boys 11-12) from the Kenny Academy, both in Birmingham, were crowned champions in their respective categories.

The Championships is hosted by An Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelacha and began yesterday with an opening ceremony attended by world famous dancer, Michael Flatley

Mayor of London Boris Johnson, said the event is a “vital boost to London’s economy”.

Throughout the eight days of competition, dancers will compete in solo, ceilí, choreography and dance drama categories in a variety of age groups

The World Irish Dancing Championships run from April 13th to 20th.
