A WOMAN in her 70s has died following a house fire in the Mayfield area of Cork City.
The alarm was raised by the woman's neighbours in Silversprings Court just before 8pm on Saturday.
Gardaí, the ambulance service and two units from the Cork City Fire Brigade were despatched to the scene.
Fire crew in breathing apparatus entered the house, where the woman's body was discovered.
She was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was removed to Cork University Hospital for a post mortem examination.
The woman was the sole occupant of the house and no other injuries were reported.
The Coroner has been notified and gardaí from Mayfield garda station are investigating.
John Maher, Labour Party Councillor for Cork City North East Ward, said the community was coming to terms with the tragedy.
"Prayers and thoughts are with the woman, her family, friends and neighbours," he said.
