Irish teen who died in Croatia laid to rest in Galway

AN IRISH teenager who died in tragic circumstances in Croatia last week has been laid to rest.

Eamon Buckley, 19, was holidaying in the resort of Split with a large group of friends, including his twin brother Liam, when he died.

Eamon’s parents Tom and Joy and his sisters Róisín and Caoimhe joined Liam in mourning at St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church in Galway city for his funeral service yesterday (July 20).

It is believed that Eamon drowned when he fell from a boat in the early hours of Tuesday last (July 14) in Split harbour.

The Moycullen, Co. Galway native was a first year student at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG).

“Our hearts are breaking for you today,” Rev John Godfrey told the Buckley family as they mourned their loss.

“This day last week Eamon was having the time of his life in Croatia on holiday with his brother Liam and with their friends. Just one week ago nobody could even have imagined that we would be here now at his funeral.”

Eamon was remembered as a talented Gaelic football player during the service, with a county medal to his name, having won the football championship with his Moycullen team.

“He was a brother to us all,” Liam Buckley wrote in a statement read out during the service.

Eamon was laid to rest in Moycullen cemetery after the service.
