Irish teenager held in Spain on attempted murder charge

AN IRISH teenager is being held in custody in Spain on an attempted murder charge following a street brawl on the Costa Del Sol.

The 17-year-old youth was part of a group of four Irish men who are believed to have had an argument over a girl during a night out in Puerto Banus, a resort near Marbella in Spain.

At around 3am, the teenager’s brother allegedly punched the victim before it is claimed the 17-year-old kicked him in the head as he lay on the ground.

The victim, who is also a teenager from Ireland, was taken to hospital in Malaga, after the fight on August 14, where he was treated for “life-threatening” injuries to the head. Local police made arrests at the scene.

The injured man is now being treated in hospital, having spent several days in intensive care where he was in an induced coma.

A youth court judge remanded the arrested teen at a young offenders' institution.

His brother has been released on bail. It is understood he has had his passport removed from him and will not be able to leave Spain.

The Irish teenager is expected to be held in custody for a number of months before he is released ahead of his trial – the date of which has not yet been set.

The upmarket resort of Puerto Banus is a popular summer destination for holidaymakers from both Ireland and Britain.
