Man arrested in hunt for killer of Irishman left in a bin

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of Michael Hunt who was found badly beaten in a skip in South Croydon on Saturday morning.

Police believe the Co. Waterford native, who was living in Selhurst, may have known his attacker.

A 21-year-old was arrested at an address in Purley, South Croydon this morning and remains in custody.

Mr Hunt was found in an alleyway at 7am on March 15, having suffered serious injuries to his head and body, which police believe to be the result of an assault. His body was found in a skip and not a wheelie bin, as had been previously reported.

He died from his injuries at Kings College Hospital five hours later.

Family in London and Ireland have been informed of his death, but a post-mortem examination into its cause has yet to conclude.

An inquest was opened and adjourned at Croydon Coroner’s Court this morning.

Officers from the Homicide and Major Crime Command continue to appeal for information from anyone who may have seen Mr Hunt on the night he was attacked.

Detective Chief Inspector Diane Tudway said: "Michael Hunt was well known in the local community and I would urge anyone with information, or who may have seen Mr Hunt in the time prior to him being found, to come forward and speak to police.”

She added: "The information available to us at this stage leads us to believe that Mr Hunt was not the victim of a stranger or random attack. However, our enquiries continue.

"At this time our thoughts are with Michael's friends and family, both here in London and in Ireland."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room on 020 8721 4005 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
